Dyslexia and the Health Triangle- in ENGLISH CLASS

Students in 2ºESO doing Barbara's project in English class will find this information helpful!!!

Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability.  It consists of many symptoms, and usually interferes with language, writing and reading skills.  This, of course, can make learning quite difficult!  The dyslexic brain develops and functions differently, and although it might make it harder to learn at school, people with dyslexia are usually very creative and inventive because of their ability to consider many aspects or solutions of a given problem or subject.

Having a learning disability can affect our lives in many ways, not just academically.  It can affect all three sides of our health triangle- social, mental and physical.  If we THINK we are not capable, we may shy away from challenges because of low self esteem.  This can hurt us socially- thinking that people won't accept us for who we are.  Physically, we may be less likely to try out for sports- especially team sports, thinking that "we just can't compete".  This all affects the mental/emotional side of our triangle- it can make us sad or depressed.

There are, however, many ways to manage dyslexia and other learning disabilities.  Professionally trained teachers and instructors can help dyslexics learn, and even use their "disability" to their advantage!  It's all a matter of PERSPECTIVE.  If you think you can- you have a much higher probability of acheiving what you set out to do- like the famous people listed below who are dyslexic and/or have similar learning disabilities.
